The History of the mask traditional Dance that is Topeng Sidakarya in Bali

Mask dance has existed since prehistoric times that are usually used for traditional ceremonies or to retell ancient stories from the ancestors. Mask dance remains sustainable until now is no exception dance mask in Bali Island. Bali is thick with tradition and customs still preserve mask dance. Especially on December 2, 2015 in Windhoek (Namibia), the UNESCO Cultural Heritage Committee sets 9 Balinese dances that are recognized as world cultural heritage , one of which is the sidakarya mask dance.

Sidakarya Topeng dance is one of Balinese dance that is danced to complement of religious ritual so that dance is called as a guardian's dance. This dance is danced by men with white mask features, narrow eyes, tonjos teeth, half-faced half-human face, long shoulder-length hair, and wearing a hooded merajah . Dancers usually carry bokorancontaining sari canang , incense, yellow rice, and sekar ura . How is the history of the emergence of the Sidakarya Topeng Dance?

The Sidakarya Topeng dance is closely related to King Waturenggong who was King Gelgel (Klungkung) in the XVI century. At the time of the ceremony of Eka Dasa Rudra (celebrated every 100 years) at Pura Besakih, a brahmin (Hindu priest) came from Keling to Pualu Bali to meet the king of Klungkung at Gelgel Palace. Keling is the name of an area in East Java.Because it comes from Keling the brahmin is known as " Brahmana Keling ".

Arriving at the destination, Gelgel's palace was quiet because the king was in Pura Besakih and was only greeted by some community leaders who were in the palace. Because the king is not in the palace, the greeting community leaders invite the Brahmana Keling to the Besakih Temple. Arriving at Pura Besakih he is addressed by the public of the publishers who are in the temple and the brahmin said to meet his brother namely King Waturenggong and advisor to the king namely Dang Hyang Nirartha. Because in ragged circumstances a beggar is, the people are very offended because they think it is impossible for such a person to be the king's brother so that the citizens forbid seeing the king. But Brahmana Keling insisted on meeting the king.
In waiting for the king he sat in a shrine called Pelinggih Surya Chandra. Up there he sits down for a moment, to remove his tiredness. Not long afterwards came the king and saw the man in rags sitting on the shrine. What a surprise his heart suddenly angrily then summoned the soldiers to ask who the person who had dared to sit up there. Hearing what was reported by the soldiers, that the man confessed as the king's brother then increased the anger of the king and ordered the soldiers to immediately drag out the alleged crazy person.According to the order alone, the soldiers drove the brahmin with the sound of cheers from Pura Besakih and the king did not recognize him as a brother.

Before the brahman leaves Pura Besakih, he then utters a curse that the ceremony held in Pura Besakih is not successful, drought earth, the people attacked plague, and pests will attack. Then the brahmin left Pura Besakih to Badanda Negara (Sidakarya Village now) and here he made a plunge. Not a few days later the atmosphere of Bali Island, especially Gelgel palace and surrounding areas began to show an unfavorable situation. All the tree plant trees that are useful for the execution of the ritual supplements all withered and the fruit are falling, the pest begins to attack the farmers' crops, the earth instantly experiences drought, rampant disease outbreaks attack the population, between royal servants quarrel without cause and all in chaos. So the schedule of Eka Dasa Ludra ceremony is not implemented, because it is not possible to continue.

Seeing that fact then Dalem Waturenggong held a semedi at Pura Besakih. He was told that he had sinned away his own brother in a despicable way and to restore the state of justice when only Brahmana Keling was able to do so. After getting the instructions, the next day the king called the prime minister, the Patih and the courtier to hold a trial to pick up the brahmana who had expelled.

Short story depart entourage picker Brahmana Keling to Badanda Negara. Arriving at a group of Badanda Country meeting with Brahmana Keling then told about the purpose of his coming to the Brahmana. In accordance with the king's order to request that the Brahmana Keling was willing to come to the king's presence as soon as possible. Then the Brahmane Keling agreed and invited the king's messengers to leave first, the Brahmana Keling will follow.

Journey back Brahmana Keling to Gelgel palace proceed to Pura Basakih no one knows. He was there first with his pickup troupe in front of the king in Pura Besakih. Upon arrival of Brahmana Keling in Pura Besakih then he was greeted as a guest of greatness and treated with great courtesy and courtesy.

In a conversation he both witnessed also by Dang Hyang Nirartha, basically that if Brahmana Keling able to restore the state of Bali as usual then Dalem Waturenggong promised and willing to admit that Brahmana Keling as the king's brother. Hearing the word of the king like that, then Brahmana Keling gladly agreed. Without any infrastructure and offerings he was silent for a moment, with extraordinary inner strength, the keaadaan of the island of Bali again as usual when the plague immediately disappeared, the plants thrived, and the pests no longer attack the farmers so that the king is able to continue the implementation of Eka Dasa Ludra at Pura Besakih.

Thanks to the services of Brahmana Keling capable of creating prosperity and abundant produce, so the ceremony can run safely, comfortably and successfully in accordance with the hope of the last king Brahmana Keling was awarded the title Dalem. From now on, the Brahmana Keling is a mereeka Dalem Sidakarya. Continue to make the ceremony as it should be. I am so glad the king because the ceremony is done really successful ( Sidakarya), he said that every Hindu people in the entire universe who perform the sacred ceremony nunas tirta Penyida Karya which is housed in Pesraman Dalem Sidakarya and must perform Mask dance Sidakarya.
